| Scholarships available at the Faculty of Law, University College Cork (National University of Ireland) 1. FUNDING SPECIFIC TO POSTGRADUATE STUDY AT UCC LAW FACULTY Taught LLM Scholarships 2011/2012 Up to two fees scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis for the taught LLM programmes. A partial fee bursary funded by the E-Law Summer Institute will be awarded on a competitive basis for the LLM (Intellectual Property & E-Law). PhD Scholarships A limited number of Law Faculty PhD Scholarships are available to fund research on an area of law of the candidate's choice, subject to available supervision. These scholarships will be valued at €15,000 per annum (which must cover both fees and subsistence). The scholarships are tenable for up to 3 years, although renewal each year is contingent on demonstration of adequate progress. Scholarship holders will be required to deliver tutorials to undergraduate students, and to apply to any external scholarship schemes relevant to their research project (e.g. IRCHSS). The Ronan Daly Jermyn Scholarship (Research Masters in Law) Ronan Daly Jermyn, Solicitors established this scholarship in 2006 to promote research in the business law field. The Scholarship is valued at €7,500 in total and is tenable at UCC to support an LLM by Research (full- time) in the business law field. Further Information on the Ronan Daly Jermyn Scholarship Comyn Kelleher Tobin Graduate Bursary This graduate bursary will be awarded to support LLM by Research or PhD studies in the Department of Law. The bursary is valued at €2,000. The Head of the Department of Law and the Director of Graduate Studies Department of Law, or their nominees, will choose the successful candidate. Aidan Synnott Graduate Study Travel Bursary Scheme [This bursary is available only to registered Law Faculty research postgraduates] Thanks to the generosity of Aidan Synnott, a UCC BCL graduate practicing as a lawyer in the USA, a fund will be made available each year to fund travel to research locations outside UCC for PhD and LLM by Research students. The fund is valued at US$3,000. The President James Slattery Prize and Medal This annual €2,000 prize and medal is awarded to a postgraduate student in the Law Faculty. Leen, who died in 1995, bequeathed €311,085.83 to the University "to create a revolving fund to provide scholarships for individual students for a term up to three years". 2. In accordance with the term of Mr. Leen's will, the University has decided to institute postgraduate scholarships as a memorial to Mr. Leen's geneerosity, in accordance with the following conditions: . EXTERNAL SOURCES OF FUNDING Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Irish candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for a Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship. National University of Ireland Travelling Studentships The Travelling Studentship Scheme, funded by the University from its own resources, has been in existence since 1910. The Travelling Studentships Scheme has as its main objectives to encourage the most able students in the NUI to pursue research at doctoral level and to attract these scholars back eventually to enrich the learning community within NUI. While in the past it was the practice that holders of Travelling Studentships had to be registered Candidates who are interested in the possibility of applying should contact Veronica Calnan at lawpostgrad@ucc. ie Details of the scholarships will be posted at http://www.nui.ie/awards/postgraduates.asp EJ Phelan Fellowship in International Law - Not on offer for 2011 This Fellowship, funded by a special bequest from the late Mr and Mrs Edward J Phelan was first awarded in 2002. The Fellowship is intended to encourage and support a postgraduate student of proven academic excellence to advance his/her scholarly research in the field of International Law. The scholarship is valued at over €25,000 (payable over one year). The fellowship was awarded to a UCC BCL Graduate in 2004, and in 2008 to fund PhD Degrees at UCC. Candidates who are interested in the possibility of applying in the future should contact Veronica Calnan at lawpostgrad@ucc.ie http://www.nui.ie/awards/research.asp Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Scholarship Programme The Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs is currently inviting applications for the following research opportunities: • A masters degree by research • A doctoral degree by research The aim of the Programme is to develop research capacity in relation to children and to support research directly related to the National Children's Strategy, through the funding of postgraduate research. Under this Programme, successful applicants receive an annual maintenance grant of €16,000 and also have university fees paid in full by the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Other Funding Sources Other students have funded their studies with grants related to their particular research work, e.g. some candidates are funded by research grants in relation to gender and human rights law and others in relation to environmental law.
